WHO WE ARE

The Nokota® Preserve

The Preserve, Chester Springs (The Nokota Preserve, The Preserve) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in beautiful Chester County, Pennsylvania, founded by Christine McGowan.

The Nokota Horse is a feral breed native to North America and the last of Sitting Bull’s revered pony.  Bred for their adaptable EQ (emotional intelligence) and compassionate spirit, these athletic and kind horses deserve a place in American history, North America today and tomorrow.

Christine and her daughter Neva were introduced to the Nokota® horse in 2011 in their driveway. After a phone call with Leo Kuntz they were invited to attend an all mare Nokota “colt start” in Ohio.  They returned home to their 14-acre farm in Chester Springs with two feral Nokota mares: Moon and Kachina.  The year was filled with ”learning and training ourselves,” notes Christine, as they embarked on a journey towards greater understanding of this unique and remarkable breed.  The experience was life-changing for Christine and she decided to change the focus of the farm—dedicating the farm and her life to sharing and understanding this endangered breed.

“Join me and share passion for the Nokota breed and their place in American History. These horses embody freedom, the REAL America of yesterday…stamina, endurance and work ethic. I’ve created this foundation to advocate for the remaining Nokota—a horse with an “All-American” edge—and ensure they have a place in our future. The Nokota breed is special, and their story celebrates the Lakota horse nation and the spirit behind these horses. I believe there is a common denominator that can benefit the horses and those who love them and leave a mark where it is deserved.”
